Photos: Pioneer Peak hotshots fight tundra fires

Two massive Southwest Alaska wildfires have been "put to bed," according to the Alaska Division of Forestry.

The Whitefish Lake fire (about six miles south of Kalskag) and the Bogus Creek fire (about eight miles south of the Whitefish Lake fire) were ignited by lightning May 31. Division of Forestry spokesperson Tim Mowry said both were contained by nearly 200 firefighters and are being monitored.

"(It) means we will fly (over) them periodically to make sure there are no visible smoke or hot spots," Mowry wrote in an email.

The Whitefish Lake fire burned 14,824 acres, and the Bogus Creek fire burned 25,260 acres.

"That's not expected to change unless they come back to life," Mowry said.

Crews from Pioneer Peak Interagency Hotshot Crew battled both blazes.
