Alaska AHEC Behavioral Health Camps

There will be three camps held this summer located at three different locations in Alaska. Students will be placed in camps based on availability, region and vacancies. These camps are designed for students to explore career pathways in behavioral health. Students will earn one college credit and learn topics including abuse, neglect, addiction, grief, stress and mental health while discovering career paths such as behavioral health aides, counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other positions. Summer of Wonder

Our Summer of Wonder camps deliver Waldorf values with fun, creativity and outdoor exploration. There are six week-long camps including Strings Camp with Mary Schallert, acclaimed Orchestra Teacher, and weekly camps offering age-appropriate craft activities, nature observation and outdoor play. Learn about sustainability; cultures of the world; elemental forces of the universe?; the breadth of artistic possibilities; and mindfulness and magic. Before/after-camp care is available.

Alaska Business Week

Alaska Business Week (ABW) is a one-week summer program teaching Alaskan high school students the basics of business, leadership and entrepreneurship. Participants live on a college campus and work as teams in a dynamic business simulation with the guidance of a mentor from the business community. After completing the program, students have a competitive edge on workplace readiness, college preparation and overall life success. ABW gives participants the tools they will need to succeed after their high school graduation.

Mini-Med School I

In Mini-Med School I, campers will become medical students for a week. They will explore various organ systems, such as the skeletal, digestive and cardiac systems, through hands-on animal dissections and engaging activities.

Mini-Med School II

In Mini-Med School II, campers will continue their exploration of the human body. Campers will explore the nervous, urinary and muscular systems through hands-on dissections and engaging activities. Mini-Med School I is not a prerequisite for this camp.

Crime Scene Investigation

Ever wonder how a hair can solve a crime? Campers will become investigators, using the tools and techniques forensic scientists use to solve crimes.

Environmental Science Camp

If you have ever wondered how the household drain water affects the wildlife around us, then this class is for you! Learn more about air, water, soils, ecosystems, climate change and pollution in the environment. Each day students will use the knowledge they gained in class to work through a scenario and solve an environmental problem.

Preschool Programs for Ages 4-5

Patient, enthusiastic staff engage children with hands-on experiential education activities, encouraging campers to interact positively with the environment and each other. Programs aim to develop your children's senses, motor skills and relationships using movement, nature games, music and storytelling. Programs include Salmon Snoopers; Geology Rocks; Wolves, Bears and Bullwinkle; Creek wonders; AK Native Culture Keepers; and Buzzy Bugs Bonanza.

Age or grade level: Ages 4-5

Day Programs for Ages 6-7

Naturalist instructors lead small groups, teaching the basics of wetland ecology, forest communities, Alaskan mammals and outdoor survival skills. Staff use hands on activities, movement, music storytelling drama, leave no trace skill and outdoor survival skills. Staff encourages positive social interactions among campers through group activities and exploration. Classes offered include Whale and Salmon Tales; Outdoor Survival; Native Culture Keepers; Creek Seekers; Dinosaurs, Fossils and Volcanoes; Farm Friends; and Woodland Wizards.

Day Programs for Ages 8-9

Learning and outdoor fun are combined as campers deepen their awareness of the ecosystems around the Campbell Creek Science Center and the Anchorage bowl, to broaden their understanding of Alaska by branching out on day field trips to other locations. Classes offered include Summit Mountaineers; AK Native Culture Keepers; Survival Challenge; Ocean Commotion; Fat Tire Bike; Earth, Fire and Ice; Paddle Mania; Fish On; Mountain Bike Mania; and Arctic Artists.

Our fast pace high adventure programs are well suited for older campers. We cover lots of ground outdoors, and we will be out and about on field trips many days. Classes offered include Climate Scientists; iAlaska; Fat Tire Bike; Fish On; Oceans Alive; Operation Farming; Peak Baggers; Reach High Climbing; River Wranglers; Rock, Ice, Volcanoes and Quakes; and Venture Bound.

Alaskan Quest Trips for Ages 8-14

Our Wilderness trips are designed for campers who are ready to spend extended time away from home in a wilderness setting. After spending time in camp checking gear, reviewing equipment, team building, wilderness safety, practicing basic skills and leave no trace camping skills, campers head out for a three or four day campout and discovery adventure. Trips include Eklutna Mountain Biking; Kenai Kayaking; Hatcher Pass Backpack; Marine Encounter; Seward Kayak Trip; Johnson Pass Bike-Pack; Kesugi Ridge Backpack and many more.

Teen Training Programs

We designed these courses for campers who are ready to share their passion, experience and skills with others. This course develops their leadership skills, preparing them for future jobs in the field of environmental education and wilderness trip guiding. Guest presenters join our specialized instructor team to lead this program. Graduates may be asked back for additional weeks as a TDC staff volunteer in training. Our training programs includes, Teacher Naturalist in Training (TNT) program. Wilderness Guide Training (WGT).

Spring Creek Farm in Palmer - Ages 4-12

Programs emphasize interactive hands-on outdoor adventure. Campers, explore, wetlands, forests and tread gently in the great outdoors. Programs include Spring Creek Expedition; Survival Challenge; Climate Scientists; Wilderness Survival; Rocks, Ice, Volcanoes and Quakes; Peak Baggers; Wild Country Explorers; and Summit Mountaineers.

Beginning Culinary Boot Camp is for youth who wish to acquire basic cooking techniques that they can take from the classroom into their home kitchen. Students will learn knife skills, safety and sanitation practices, order of operations, how to read a recipe, culinary vocabulary and, most importantly, will be preparing a wide variety of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes from scratch. Hands-on practice through instructor-led demonstrations and supervision.

Beginning Bakery Boot Camp

Beginning Bakery Boot Camp is for youth interested in exploring the methods of baking delicious breads, cookies, doughs, pastries and much more through hands-on practice! Instructor will lead with demonstrations and follow on supervision, as well as teach bakery safety/sanitation practice in our well-equipped bakery lab.

Intermediate Culinary Boot Camp

Intermediate Culinary Boot Camp is for youth who have completed Beginning Culinary Boot Camp and are familiar with knife skills/safety, basic cooking techniques and equipment. They will create artisan breads and a variety of international cakes and pastries.

Minecraft Designers

If you love the game Minecraft, but always wanted to design your own characters and buildings for your games, this class is for you! Learn the basics of creating 3-D models using a new software to design your very own objects, create skins for characters and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3-D modeling software. Students will work in teams for most of the program.

Lego Film & Stop Action Video

Make your LEGOs come to life! Bring in your favorite action figures or LEGOs and create a short film with your friends. Whether you want to recreate a scene from Star Wars or design a world of your own, this class brings your dreams to the screen. Students will need to bring in LEGOs or action figures from home, but all other equipment will be provided. Student-created films will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Make Your First Video Game

If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2-D game. App Attack

Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app and game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of app publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Minecraft Animators

Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like "Inside Out" and "Frozen" by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing and animating rigged 3-D models! Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. You do not need to own a Minecraft account to use the software in this class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Lego YOUniverse: Make Your Own Adventure!

In this LEGO adventure YOU are the star! Pick your favorite LEGO genre or create an alternate universe to create a digital illustrated story. Whether you want to fight alongside Batman, be part of a Ninjago clan, hang with Ninja Turtles, or go into space with the Bionicles - the only requirement is that you put yourself in the story! All students will end the class with a digital comic book that can be shared with friends and family on a password-protected website! Students will work in teams for most of the program.

Make Your First 3-D Video Game

Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! By popular demand, we redesigned our 3-D game design class from beginning to end. This new class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2-D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3-D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay and storytelling. Student-created games will be available on a password-protected website to share with friends and family. Students will work in teams for most of the program.

Lego Video Games

Continue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! Spanish Academy for Youth

This fun and engaging summer language course will introduce youth to the Spanish language, culture and cuisine as they take a journey through Mexico and South America. Language will be featured with basic vocabulary and phrases and lessons will be supplemented with craft projects and even food creations. Vamanos! Bring a sack lunch!

Babysitter Training & Club

The Babysitter Training program is expanded for this summer camp experience which includes training for youth who babysit or care for younger children. We start with American Red Cross training to help youth gain knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care to children and infants. Activities and crafts will center around creating games, activities and storytelling to add to a babysitter's portfolio. Participants learn leadership skills, home safety, how to develop a babysitting business, how to choose age-appropriate activities and how to recognize and handle a variety of behaviors. Finally, we'll train students in pediatric CPR and First Aid with a certification from American Red Cross. Fee includes all supplies and materials. Please bring sack lunch.

Art Academy

Give us a few days with your students, and we'll send back a young Picasso, or VanGogh, or maybe even a Monet! In this great four-day camp, students will be introduced to the Masters of Art and will learn to create art projects in those styles. We'll include pen, pencil and charcoal drawings, watercolor painting, oils and acrylics. At the end of class, students will have completed various art projects including frameable art, mini canvases and all-occasion cards. Send a sack lunch and water bottle. We'll provide snacks and all materials and supplies for the classes.

In this week-long academy, students will learn how energy is produced and consumed, with a focus on renewable sources. Attendees will create a mini power grid using a small photovoltaic array, wind turbine, battery bank and various electrical loads, which will be tested for effectiveness and efficiency.

Robotics: Grades 5-6; 5-8; 7-8; 9-12

In this week-long academy, students will learn to design, build and program a robot to complete a task. Topics will include motors, actuators, sensors and programming. Attendees will assemble a robot to compete in both user-piloted and autonomous challenges like obstacle courses.

Wing Aerodynamics: Grades 6-8

In this week-long academy, students will gain experience in fundamental aerodynamics and state-of-the-art design and prototyping of aircraft wings. Attendees will generate an airfoil using digital tools and fabricate a scaled aircraft prototype. Their model will be tested in a wind tunnel and flow will be using laser-induced fluorescence.

Arduino Robotics: Grades 9-12

In this programming-focused week-long session, students are expected to have some experience in robotics and programming. Attendees will learn to build and program a simple robot using an Arduino Nano capable of accomplishing complex tasks. The robots will be programmed to navigate a maze and be controlled remotely using Android tablets or cell phones.

This week-long session is designed for students who have some experience designing structures. Bridges will be constructed using metal, wood and mechanical fasteners (screws and bolts). Bridges will be tested for strength and material efficiency.
