West sweeps Valdez to win West Valley invitational volleyball tourney

The West Eagles swept the Valdez Buccaneers 25-15, 25-20 in the championship match of the 12-team West Valley invitational volleyball tournament Saturday in Fairbanks.

Rosie Rush distributed 31 assists and came up with nine digs for the Eagles, who got 14 kills from tournament MVP Brooke Dexter and 11 kills, nine digs and nine aces from Kaitlin Hampton.

The Eagles downed West Valley 25-23, 25-23 in a semifinal earlier Saturday. Valdez, last year's Class 3A state champion, defeated North Pole in the other semifinal.

"Our team stepped up to the challenge,'' West coach Mike Vincent told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

"We definitely peaked at the right time,'' he said. "They put some energy in our plan and we didn't lose a set all day long. We didn't give Valdez a chance and they're a good group and they played hard. We had defensive intensity and we had size as well; it was a real satisfying win and the kids deserved it."
