Girls basketball: 4th-ranked East knocks off 2nd-ranked Chugiak

East 55, Chugiak 44

Balanced scoring, good free throw shooting and a big first quarter lifted East to a 55-44 win over Chugiak in a Wednesday night battle between two of the state's top-ranked girls basketball teams.

Four East players scored in double figures in the Cook Inlet Conference game at Chugiak.

Fourth-ranked East raced to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter behind six points apiece from Azaria Robinson and Sandin Kidder.

Second-ranked Chugiak battled back to trail by two at halftime, but a nine-point third quarter from Octavia Hines gave the T-birds breathing room. East sealed the win by hitting seven of eight free throws in the final quarter.

Hines led the T-birds with 13 points, and Robinson, Kidder and Tennae Voliva each scored 10.

Chugiak's Chasity Horn led all scorers with 16 points. Teammate Nicole Pinckney added 13.

Bartlett 51, South 50, OT

Bartlett's Kalo Uhila went coast-to-coast for a game-tying layup at the buzzer and then helped her team prevail 51-50 over South in overtime Wednesday night in CIC action at Bartlett.

Tied 47-47 at the end of regulation, Bartlett got baskets from Uhila and Julie Tosi in the extra period to get the win.

South's lone overtime points came when Nani Garner sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Uhila led Bartlett with 17 point and Tosi added eight. Kianna McWhite contributed 15 points and had three key steals in the fourth quarter for the Golden Bears.

South let a first-half lead slip away — the Wolverines led 13-5 after the first quarter and 28-15 at the half. Garner's 14 points and Madison Ayers' 13 points led South.

West 60, Eagle River 31

Nene John powered the West girls basketball team Wednesday with 14 points, 12 rebounds and five steals in a 60-31 homecourt win over Eagle River.

Alex Bowen added eight points and 12 rebounds and Diamond Fields pitched in 16 points for the Eagles.

Eagle River put two players in double figures — Chyna Smith (13 points) and Lauren Green (10).

Dimond 78, Service 17

Alissa Pili's 20 points and eight boards helped top-ranked Dimond outpace Service 78-17 Wednesday in a CIC girls game at Dimond.

Jahnna Hajdukovich added 14 points for the Lynx. Monique Giles led Service with nine points.
