Chugiak holds off Service boys basketball team in double overtime

The Chugiak Mustangs needed two overtimes Tuesday to fend off the Service Cougars 57-56 at a Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball game Tuesday night at Service High.

The teams battled to a 43-43 tie after four quarters and were knotted 47-47 after the first overtime. Chugiak outscored the Cougars 10-9 in the second overtime.

Zach Cole pumped in 24 points for the Mustangs, Jackson Wall added 13 and Owen Lewis had 10. Lewis hit four free throws and Cole hit three in the two overtime periods.

Chugiak led 37-28 after three quarters, but Service’s Zach Williamson powered a big fourth quarter to tie the game. He scored nine of his 17 points in fourth quarter.

Dylan Westlake led Service with 21 points, nine of them in overtime.

In other boys games, undefeated East beat South 45-39, Dimond defeated Eagle River 62-49 and West topped Bartlett 65-55.

In girls action, Bartlett remained unbeaten with a 53-44 win over West; Dimond throttled Eagle River 46-18; Chugiak breezed past Service 59-27 and East topped South 65-21.

The East boys moved to 7-0 by surviving a low-scoring game with South. The Thunderbirds got a boost from Jahbez Sellers (11 points), Elijah Reed (10) and Hasaan Herrington (9), and Aidan Ohlson led South with 10 points.

The Dimond boys rode a 23-point game from Luke Johnston past Eagle River. The Lynx hit 20 of 28 free throws, with Johnston going 6 of 7 from the foul line and Caleb Francisco going 3 of 4. Francisco finished with 13 points.

Marcus Andrews and Sean Berry scored 12 points apiece for Eagle River.

The West boys enjoyed high-scoring games from Traivar Jackson (22 points) and Willie Zamora (21) to hold off Bartlett. Bishop Tosi led the Golden Bears with 11 points and D.J. Joseph had 11.

In girls competition, Bartlett ran its record to 7-0 by pulling away from West in the second half. Amelia Uhila’s 21 points and Adam Kaganak’s 14 points and five rebounds lifted the Golden Bears, who led 26-24 at halftime. West was led by Lupe’lani Vaaia’s 13 points.

Chugiak overwhelmed Service by landing three players in double figures — Caitlin Wachmann (19 points), Italia Fraize (13) and Octavia Knox (13). Genevieve Mahe’s 12 points sparked Service.

Dimond held Eagle RIver scoreless in the first quarter and finished with 10 players in the scoring column, a balanced effort led by Lewanne Brower’s 11 points and Kayla Pili’s 10. Amaya Hudson led Eagle River with eight points.

No details were reported from East’s victory over South.
