In CIC basketball, top seeds advance but No. 2 Dimond girls fall by one point

The Cook Inlet Conference basketball tournament produced another upset, and this one was a thriller.

The third-seeded West girls upended second-seeded Dimond 40-39 during semifinal action Friday at West High.

All of Friday’s winners secured berths in next week’s Class 4A state tournament.

On the boys side, top-seeded East romped past South 63-43 and second-seeded Chugiak ended West’s run through the tournament, 63-54.

On the girls side, top-seeded Bartlett buried East 54-29 to advance along with West.

Bartlett and West will meet for the girls title at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at West High. East and Chugiak will play for the boys championship at 7:30 p.m.

In the third-place games, it’s Dimond versus East in the 1:30 p.m. girls game, and South versus West in the 3:30 p.m. boys game.

Boys games

East 63, South 43 -- Four players reached double figures for the undefeated Thunderbirds, who grabbed a 33-19 halftime lead.

Daion Doughty sparked East’s first-half run by scoring nine of his 11 points. Hasaan Herrington tallied a game-high 16 and Damarion Delaney and Jahbez Sellers each scored 11 for the T-birds.

South got points from nine players, including a team-high 13 from A.J. Yabut.

Chugiak 63, West 54 -- Jackson Wall drained three triples in the pivotal fourth quarter to propel Chugiak, which led by one point after three quarters.

Wall finished with 14 points and was joined in double figures by teammates Zach Cole (15), Owen Lewis (13) and Kellen Beam (10). West’s Travair Jackson led all scorers with 18, Jullian Pedigo added 16 and Willie Zamora 10.

Chugiak survived by outscoring the Eagles 24-16 in the fourth quarter. Wall scored 11 and Morgan Grant added six for the Mustangs that quarter.

Girls games

West 40, Dimond 39 -- Zariah Queen scored 13 points, including a big 3-pointer near the end of the game, to lift the Eagles.

The Eagles trailed 15-9 after the first quarter but recovered to lead 23-22 at the half and 31-29 after three quarters. Lupe’lani Vaaia supplied 11 points for the winners.

Dimond’s Lewanne Brower led all scorers with 19.

Bartlett 54, East 29 -- Bartlett senior Amelia ‘Uhila poured in 22 points and stole the ball eight times to top the 400-steal mark for her career.

‘Uhila pumped in 10 points in the first quarter to lead the undefeated Golden Bears to a 15-3 lead. Kendal Hodgdon finished with 15 points for Bartlett, and Chaunasea Delaney had 11 to lead East.
