Chaminade rocks 14th-ranked UAA volleyball team

The UAA volleyball team opened last season with a 14-match winning streak. It opened this season with a one-game winning streak.

A night after winning their season opener against BYU-Hawaii, the Seawolves were swept Friday night in Honolulu by Chaminade University.

Hitting errors doomed the 14th-ranked Seawolves in the tense 25-19, 29-27, 27-25 loss — UAA's first three-set loss since October 2014.

They committed 25 attack errors and compiled a .081 attack percentage, with only two players hitting higher than .100. Diana Fa'amausil's team-high 10 kills came on .240 hitting, and Vanessa Hayes' three kills came on .333 hitting.

Chrisalyn Johnson also had 10 kills for UAA, but she made eight errors to finish with a .062 attack percentage.

Veterans Leah Swiss and Erin Braun both had five kills and four errors, with Swiss hitting .033 and Braun hitting .045.

Despite those woes, UAA made things close in the second and third sets.

The second set was tied 24-24 and UAA twice was a point away from winning it. But Chaminade, playing its season opener, scored the final three points for the 29-27 win.

The third set was tied at 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, 23-23, 24-24 and 25-25. Chaminade went up 26-25 with a kill from Daisia LaBrie and then stuffed Braun at the net for match point.

UAA was coming off Thursday's four-set win over BYU-Hawaii. Braun racked up 11 kills, seven blocks and five aces and Swiss furnished 12 kills and 10 digs in the 22-25, 25-7, 25-18, 25-17 victory.

The Seawolves end their three-match road trip in Hawaii against Hawaii Pacific on Saturday at 8 p.m. Alaska time.
