UAA volleyball team earns second sweep of weekend

It almost wasn't a sweep, but 12th-ranked UAA held on to win its second conference match in two days 25-18, 25-20, 27-25 over Seattle Pacific on Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Tied at 25-25 in the third set, the Seawolves earned a point on a Falcons service error and Keala Kaio-Perez hit the match-winning point on a pass from Leah Swiss.

The win moved UAA to 12-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Seawolves have won 11 straight.

Senior middle blocker Erin Braun bolstered UAA at the net with a match-high 13 kills, .429 hitting percentage and three blocks.

Senior setter Morgan Hooe added 32 assists and 13 digs, and sophomore libero Kyla Militante-Amber nabbed 24 digs.

"I was fairly pleased with our play in the first two sets," UAA coach Chris Green said at a post-match press conference. "Seattle Pacific is a very well coached and experienced team, though, and we were fortunate to escape in that third set. Erin and Morgan really provided the veteran leadership at the right times, and that made the difference tonight."

Swiss, a sophomore, earned a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs.

The Seawolves hit slightly better Saturday (.248) than they did in Friday's win over Saint Martin's (.194). On both nights, their opponent under .100.

Seattle Pacific (4-6, 0-2 GNAC) hit .079. Lexi Biondi and Gabby Oddo racked up 10 kills apiece for the Falcons.

The Seawolves trailed 19-14 in the third set before five straight points tied the set at 19-19. The set stayed close from there until UAA eked out the last two points.

Next up for UAA is a four-match road trip starting with a Thursday showdown against No. 19 Western Washington in Bellingham. The Vikings were the top-ranked team in the GNAC preseason coaches poll after winning the NCAA Division II West Region championship last season.
