Hoops victory keeps UAA men in the hunt for postseason spot

The UAA men's basketball team kept its postseason hopes alive Saturday night by rolling past Central Washington 70-54 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Josiah Wood scored a career-high 19 points, Malik Clements racked up 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds and Drew Peterson handed out a career-high six assists to spark the Seawolves.

The win moves UAA to 12-12 overall and 8-8 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Seawolves are tied with the Nanooks of UAF for sixth place in the GNAC with four games remaining. The top six teams will play in the conference tournament March 1-3 in Anchorage.

"We used some pretty funky lineups tonight because of more injuries to our guards, but our guys were able to make the right adjustments and get us a big victory,"  UAA coach Rusty Osborne said in a press release. "Josiah got some good open looks and knocked them down, and he did a nice job of controlling the pace again as our 'point forward.' I'm really pleased as well that we could send our seniors out on a high note."

UAA led from start to finish to snap Central Washington's six-game winning streak.

In the first half, the Seawolves rode 40 percent shooting and held the Wildcats (14-9, 9-7) scoreless for more than five minutes to grab a 33-23 lead at the break.

The Seawolves knocked down 10 of their 23 long-range shots. Wood drained four of his five 3-point attempts to lead all scorers and Kylan Osborne sank a pair of treys on his way to nine points.

The game marked the final regular-season home game for seniors Drew Peterson (7 points, 6 assists) and D.J. Ursery (5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 assists).

The Seawolves play their final four games of the season on the road, beginning with a Thursday game against second-place Western Washington in Bellingham.
