After an emotionally trying race, it's the end of the trail for Iditarod racer Aliy Zirkle. The Two Rivers musher arrived in Nome at 9:42 a.m. Tuesday in third place. Her finish comes days after she was hit by a snowmachiner near the Yukon River checkpoint of Nulato. Zirkle was not injured and continued racing.
But the incident left the fan-favorite musher -- known for her friendly, outgoing personality -- fighting to maintain her composure as she continued down the trail.
This is Zirkle's 16th finish and fifth time in the top 10. She was runner-up three times in a row from 2012 to 2014. She ended her race with 13 dogs.
