Up to $10,000 from state? Some 31,000 families already benefitting

Alaska homeowners who used the Alaska Housing Finance Corp. Home Energy Rebate Program or 5 Star Plus New Home Rebate Program and have since built or purchased a new or existing home are eligible for a new rebate.

The program change was implemented on Jan. 11.

Alaskans interested or wanting to sign up for either program should contact the AHFC Rebate Call Center at 1-877-257-3228 or go online to www.akrebate.com.

The Home Energy Rebate Program focuses on energy efficiency upgrades with up to a $10,000 rebate available to homeowners. The 5 Star Plus New Home Rebate Program, Alaska's highest energy efficiency rating, differs slightly, providing a $7,500 rebate for new home construction. Both programs encourage homeowners to construct, purchase or retrofit homes that are energy efficient, saving homeowners an average of 33 percent after completion.

Since 2008, nearly 31,000 families have received energy ratings on their homes and the majority have followed through, each receiving an average check of more than $6,300 and saving more than $1,000 in annual fuel costs, according to Dan Fauske, chief executive officer of AHFC.
