Two named to Fish and Game administrative posts

Hazel Nelson has been appointed director of the Division of Subsistence, and Monica Wellard as executive director of the Board of Fisheries, Alaska Commissioner of Fish and Game Cora Campbell announced Thursday.

Nelson is replacing Jim Simon, subsistence program manager, who has been serving as acting director of the division for the past few months. Wellard replaces Jim Marcotte, who is retiring after 28 years with the department.

Nelson, who was born and raised in Egegik, has years of experience including hands-on work with state and federal resource regulatory processes, local governments and economic development bodies, Campbell said.

Nelson has worked with the North Pacific Fisheries Management Council, Lake and Peninsula Borough, Bristol Bay economic Development Corp., the US-Russia Inter-Governmental Consultative Committee, and the Southwest Alaska Municipal Conference. She will be stationed in Anchorage.,

Wellard has held several positions in her 18 years with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Prior to her latest appointment, Wellard served for five years as assistant director of the Division of Sport Fish, and previously held the administrative operations manager position with the Division of Commercial Fisheries.

She will be stationed in Juneau.
