California man, 70, collapses and dies during hike at Denali National Park

A visitor at Denali National Park died Tuesday after collapsing during a guided hike, the National Park Service said.

The 70-year-old man from Berkeley, California collapsed sometime around 12:20 p.m., the park service said in a statement. The man’s hiking group was in the Kantishna area, in the park’s central region.

The man’s cause of death was not immediately known, National Park Service spokeswoman Kathleen Kelly said.

Several people from businesses in the area brought emergency equipment to the scene after other hikers in the man’s group called for help using an SOS device, according to the statement.

They hikers performed CPR on the man, who wasn’t breathing and didn’t have a pulse, for more than an hour before the park’s medical director recommended over the satellite phone that they stop.

Members of the group carried the man’s body to Denali Park Road, the park service said.

After several hours, the park service reached the group’s remote location and took the man back to the park’s entrance nearly 100 miles away, where they were met by a Fairbanks-based funeral service, Kelly said.
