2 killed, including child, in Seward Highway collision near Portage

Two people died, including a child, in a collision Monday afternoon on the Seward Highway near the Portage exit, Anchorage Police said.

The collision involved three vehicles. Several survivors were transported to the hospital with injuries, some life-threatening, police wrote in an online report.

Police responded to the collision at Mile 81 at about 2:53 p.m., police wrote.

Investigators believe a Subaru heading north crossed into oncoming traffic in the southbound lane near the Portage exit, hitting a Jeep with four occupants head-on, police wrote. The Jeep rolled as it continued moving south. The Subaru went sideways and was T-boned by a Volvo traveling behind the Jeep, police wrote.

The Jeep was carrying a family of four. A man and a girl were pronounced dead at the scene, police wrote. A woman and another girl were transported to the hospital and were expected to survive, police wrote.

The man driving the Subaru was traveling alone and and was transported by medics to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Four people in the same family were in the Volvo that was traveling behind the Jeep -- two adults and two juveniles. A woman was transported to the hospital in unknown condition, according to police. The others in the car suffered minor injuries, police wrote.

Identities of the deceased will be release pending next-of-kin procedures, police wrote.

The collision shut down the Seward Highway for more than 5 hours. No arrests had been made Monday evening, and police are still investigating the circumstances around the collision, including whether speed or impairment were factors, police said.
