Two drivers killed in Sterling Highway collision west of Cooper Landing

Two people died Saturday night in a collision on the Sterling Highway, Alaska State Troopers said.

The collision was reported around 6:20 p.m. at Mile 64, between Sterling and Cooper Landing, troopers wrote in an online statement.

“A preliminary investigation determined that a non-commercial van crossed into oncoming traffic,” the statement said. “The van sideswiped a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction and then collided with a second vehicle head-on.”

Fedos Martushoff, 55, of Sterling was driving the van and 26-year-old Matthew Shull of Seward was driving the second vehicle, troopers wrote. Both died at the scene.

A passenger in Shull’s vehicle was flown to an Anchorage hospital and is expected to survive, troopers said.

No other injuries were reported, and troopers said the cause of the collision is under investigation.
