Human remains found in burned cabin near Soldotna

Human remains were found Tuesday in the rubble of a remote cabin just outside Soldotna that had burned to the ground, Alaska State Troopers say.

On Tuesday evening, the troopers received a request for a welfare check on a man who hadn’t responded to family members for multiple days after they tried to contact him, according to an online dispatch posted Wednesday. The man has not been identified.

But before the troopers could get to the cabin, a family friend found it burned to the ground and covered in snow, the dispatch said. Troopers and deputy state fire marshals responded to the scene and found human remains.

The cabin was the man’s main residence, troopers spokesperson Austin McDaniels said. The last time family heard from him was Dec. 13.

The remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner for formal identification. Fire marshals are investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
