Driver dies in collision with moose and second vehicle on Kenai Peninsula

A 36-year-old Soldotna man died Tuesday evening in a collision with a moose on the Sterling Highway that also injured two people in a second vehicle, Alaska State Troopers said.

Sam Clyde was southbound on the highway near Soldotna in a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle when it struck an adult cow moose, troopers said.

After the moose strike, Clyde’s car crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a 2013 Ford Edge, troopers said.

Troopers and Central Emergency Services responded to multiple reports of the accident just after 7 p.m. Clyde was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two people in the Ford were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for injuries described as not life-threatening.

An investigation continues.
