Valdez woman killed in collision, child suffers life-threatening injuries

A 31-year-old woman died Friday morning in a two-vehicle collision in Valdez that left a juvenile passenger with life-threatening injuries, city officials said.

The accident was reported just after 8 a.m. near the Goldfields Softball Complex on the Richardson Highway, according to a statement from the city.

Valdez fire and police arrived to find Valdez resident Ashley Wiley had been ejected from her vehicle and was dead at the scene. Wiley was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, officials said.

A juvenile passenger was transported by helicopter from Providence Valdez Medical Center to Anchorage for treatment, officials said. The other driver declined medical assistance and did not appear injured or impaired, they said.

The highway was closed for just over two hours. An investigation continues.
