1 dead, 3 injured in Seward Highway crash near Portage

A crash on the Seward Highway near Portage killed one person and injured three others Wednesday, authorities said.

Anchorage police said in an online alert that the Anchorage Fire Department along with police from Anchorage and Whittier responded to Mile 78 of the highway just after 2:15 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a fatal collision.

Police said in an updated alert that they believe an SUV driving southbound toward the Kenai Peninsula lost control on a curve and was hit by a pickup truck traveling north toward Anchorage.

The woman driving the SUV was declared dead at the scene, police wrote. Her identity will be released after police have finished notifying her family, they wrote.

Three people in the pickup — the driver and two passengers — were taken to the hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The closure, at the Placer River Bridge south of the Portage turnoff, lasted several hours Wednesday, ending around 10 p.m., police wrote.
