1 dead, 4 seriously injured in Labor Day collision on Kenai Peninsula

A Wisconsin woman died and four other people were seriously injured in a head-on collision Monday afternoon on the Sterling Highway, Alaska State Troopers said.

A Wisconsin man was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer near Mile 71.5 when he crossed the center line just before 3 p.m. and collided with a white 2022 Toyota Corolla driven by a North Carolina man, troopers said. The area is east of Sterling.

A passenger in the Ford Explorer identified as 59-year-old Wisconsin resident Wanda Yvonne Cooke died at the scene, troopers said.

Both drivers were seriously injured in the crash, troopers said. The only passenger in the Toyota and one of the four passengers in the Ford also had serious injuries, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said Tuesday.

An investigation continues. McDaniel said there were no indications of drug or alcohol use.
