Girdwood man dies in Chugach paragliding accident

A paraglider crashed in the Eagle River Valley on Sunday afternoon and died, Alaska State Troopers said.

A person was photographing 33-year-old Joshua Randich, of Girdwood, when they lost sight of him and called for help around 1:45 p.m., troopers said.

Randich crashed at about 2,700 feet of elevation, according to troopers spokesman John Dougherty. He had been paragliding with friends near Mount Magnificent and two of them were able to reach him shortly after the crash, Dougherty said. They initiated CPR before an Alaska Air National Guard Pave Hawk helicopter arrived to transport Randich to an Anchorage hospital, according to troopers.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital, troopers said.

Randich’s next of kin were notified of his death and his body was sent to the State Medical Examiner Office for autopsy, troopers said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what caused Randich to crash, Dougherty said, but an investigation is ongoing.
