4 rescued from capsized fishing boat near Kodiak

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard and the crew of a good Samaritan vessel rescued four people from a fishing boat that capsized off Kodiak Island on Sunday.

Watchstanders with the Anchorage Coast Guard sector got a report Sunday afternoon from the crew of the Alaska Rose that the fishing vessel was taking on water, the Coast Guard said in a statement Monday. A helicopter crew from the Coast Guard’s Kodiak station responded to the area, which was about two miles northeast of Chiniak on Kodiak Island, and rescued one person from the capsized vessel just before 5 p.m., the agency said.

A good Samaritan vessel also arrived on the scene around 5 p.m., and its crew rescued three people from the water, the Coast Guard said. All four people from the Alaska Rose were taken to Kodiak and met by emergency medical services.

“I wholeheartedly thank the good Samaritans involved,” sector Anchorage command duty officer Lt. Madeline Romito said in the statement. “The quick response between them and the helicopter crew played a major role in the positive outcome of this case.”

The cause of the vessel incident is being investigated, the Coast Guard said. Weather conditions at the time of the rescues included 8-foot seas and 30 knot winds, the agency said.
