Anchorage city attorney Bill Falsey promoted to city manager

Anchorage Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has named a new city manager — his current city attorney, Bill Falsey.

Falsey will replace Mike Abbott, who is leaving his post to become the chief executive of the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority.

"Bill Falsey has been a key part of my leadership team for more than two years," Berkowitz said in a statement on Tuesday. "He has proven to be a strong leader as Municipal Attorney, and has gained the trust and respect of (city) directors and the greater community."

The city manager oversees 9 city departments, three utilities and the city-managed port and airport, as well as broad budget planning.

Falsey, as the city attorney, represents the city in litigation, supervises the municipal prosecutor's office and serves as a policy adviser to the mayor.

Abbott's last day is Oct. 31. Berkowitz has not yet picked Falsey's successor, said city spokeswoman Kristin DeSmith.
