Man dies in collision on Seward Highway near Rabbit Creek Road

A man died Friday morning and three people were injured in a collision on the Seward Highway near Rabbit Creek Road in South Anchorage, police said.

The apparent T-bone collision, reported to police around 10:45 a.m., involved a pickup and an SUV, Anchorage police spokesman MJ Thim said.

Police said in an alert that the crash occurred when the driver of a white Ford Expedition driven by 72-year-old Morris Parrish tried to turn left onto the highway from the Rabbit Creek Shooting Range parking lot.

“The Ford’s driver, who had a stop sign, turned directly into the path of a southbound Dodge pickup which caused a T-bone crash,” police said. The Ford rolled before it stopped upright, police said.

Parrish, who was alone in his vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Three people in the Dodge pickup were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, emergency officials said. They had to be extricated by emergency responders, Anchorage Fire Chief Jodie Hettrick said.

“There were no signs of impairment for the driver of the Dodge. It will not be known if drugs or alcohol was a factor for the deceased until toxicology results are received,” police said.

The northbound lanes of the Seward Highway, along with one southbound lane, were closed while police and fire responders were on the scene. By 5 p.m., all lanes of the highway had reopened.
