Anchorage man arrested after shooting another man during altercation, police say

A 24-year-old Anchorage man shot another man during an altercation in Government Hill, sending him to the hospital Friday night, police said.

The man who was shot is expected to survive, the Anchorage Police Department said in an alert Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Richardson Vista Road at 9:29 p.m. Friday, according to police. Police said they believe Bruce J. Witt was fighting with the victim when Witt pulled out a handgun and shot him.

There was no indication the two knew each other before the incident, according to police, who said they’re still investigating the motive behind the shooting. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries to his upper body, police said.

Around 9:52 p.m., officers found Witt in his nearby home and took him into custody, police said. After detectives interviewed him, Witt was remanded at the Anchorage jail on a felony first-degree assault charge, according to police.

APD noted that police would be in the area as the scene is processed.
