Gas meter fire quickly extinguished near popular downtown Anchorage lounge

A gas meter fire Tuesday morning in downtown Anchorage between Bernie’s Bungalow Lounge and a parking garage prompted a large response but did not spread to either building, Anchorage Fire Department officials say.

The fire was reported just before 9:50 a.m., according to Assistant Chief Alex Boyd. About a dozen fire department units were on scene as of 10:15 a.m. The lounge is located on D Street between Sixth and Seventh avenues.

The flames were “to the rear of the building, crews are keeping the fire out of the building,” Boyd said in a message. Firefighters controlled the flames along with Enstar crews, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
