Woman killed in Glenn Highway single-vehicle crash near Eagle River

A woman was killed Friday evening when the car she was riding in veered off the Glenn Highway south of Eagle River and crashed, the Anchorage Police Department said.

Police and medics responded to the scene of the collision along the inbound Glenn near the weigh station — south of the Eagle River Loop Road exit — just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, the department said in an online statement. An initial investigation found that a Ford Crown Victoria had lost control and left the roadway, police said.

A woman who was one of the car’s passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The vehicle’s driver and two other passengers, which included a juvenile, were taken to the hospital with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Police said the identity of the woman who died will be released once next of kin have been notified. No charges were filed as of Friday night and police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, according to the department.

The collision shut down multiple lanes of the inbound Glenn Highway for several hours Friday evening while police investigated the scene, causing significant traffic delays.
