A 17-year-old girl died Monday evening after the car she was riding in struck a utility pole in East Anchorage, police say.

The teenager was a passenger in a Honda Civic traveling west on East Northern Lights Boulevard when the driver made a U-turn at Lily Street and lost control before striking the pole, the Anchorage Police Department said. Police officers and Anchorage Fire Department medics responded to reports of the collision at 5:45 p.m. The area is just west of Boniface Parkway.

Medics transported the driver, described as an adult male, to a hospital where he was treated for injuries police said were not life-threatening. The teen, as well as another passenger described as an adult female, were taken to the hospital for injuries initially described as life-threatening, police said.

The girl died from her injuries Monday evening, according to an update posted Tuesday morning.

Charges have not yet been filed as the investigation is still ongoing, a police spokeswoman said Tuesday.
