Former Iditarod champion's wife arrested for assault

Anchorage police arrested the wife of four-time Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race champion Lance Mackey on a misdemeanor assault charge Monday night in Spenard, a police spokesman said.

Tonya Mackey, 42, struck a family member named in a charging document as "L.M." with her hands while in the lobby of the Millennium Alaskan Hotel, and again in the hotel parking lot, about 9 p.m. Monday, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker. The victim suffered visible injuries that did not require treatment, Parker said.

"There were several witnesses," Parker said. "We do believe alcohol was a factor."

According to Hiland Mountain Correctional Center, Mackey remained in custody late Tuesday, hours after her arraignment.
