Glass recyling program suspended

WASILLA -- Anchorage and Valley residents will no longer be able to drop off glass for recycling starting in January.

Mary Fisher, the executive director of Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling, said the glass pickup program is being suspended because of a drop in demand in the state for recycled glass coupled with the high cost of processing. The nonprofit hopes to be able to restart the program when demand increases, she said.

Glass is currently taken at three sites: the Anchorage Recycling Center off Dowling Road, the Anchorage Regional Landfill and the Brown Jug Warehouse on Old Seward Highway. The last day for pickup will be Jan. 5, Fisher said.
