Man charged with sex abuse of underage MySpace contact

A 23-year-old Anchorage man has been arrested for having sex with an underage girl he met on MySpace, say police, who are looking for more potential victims.

The girl told police on Jan. 19 that Marty Stokes found her on MySpace and began chatting with her. Stokes texted the girl, offering to help her with homework, police say.

Stokes picked the girl up in his red Pontiac sedan three times -- twice taking her to his house, where he had "sexual relations" with her, police say.

The girl stated she was 19 years old, though her MySpace page revealed she was a freshman or sophomore in high school, police say. Police did not say how old the girl is, but spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said she is younger than 16.

The law says a person must take "reasonable" steps to find out the age of someone they're having sex with, he said. A child between the ages of 13 and 15 cannot legally consent to having sex with someone who is four years older, Parker said.

Police arrested Stokes on Jan. 21, accusing him of sexual abuse of a minor. He's now out of jail after making $15,000 bail, police said.

Police say Stokes may have additional victims or be grooming girls on MySpace under the pretense of being a mentor. They're asking anyone who thinks their child was a victim to call Anchorage police 786-8900 or 786-8809.
