State flags to be lowered in Orbeck's honor

State flags will be lowered Thursday to honor a former state labor commissioner and lawmaker.

Gov. Sean Parnell's office says in a release that former state Rep. Edmund "Ed" Orbeck died Friday in Arizona. He was 96.

The governor's office says he was the labor commissioner for Gov. Jay Hammond, serving in that role for eight years, beginning in 1975. He also served five terms in the state House and was active in Fairbanks politics.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Orbeck also was a former semi-professional football player. In the former American Professional Football League, he played for both the Los Angeles Bulldogs and the Hollywood Rangers.
