An Akiak woman died falling off a snowmachine, and now the driver faces charges

Alaska State Troopers say William Peter, a 33-year-old from Akiak, was driving a snowmachine drunk when his passenger fell off and died.

Troopers have forwarded DUI and criminally negligent homicide charges against Peter to state prosecutors, according to a dispatch posted online Wednesday.

Troopers got a report about the death around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Alfreda Evan, 30, fell off the snowmachine on the Gweek River trail west of the village of Akiachak, located on the west bank of the Kuskokwim River, 18 miles northeast of Bethel.

Evan, who was also an Akiak resident, died as a result of her injuries, troopers said.

"An on-scene investigation revealed William was intoxicated," the trooper dispatch says.

Evan's family has been told about the death.
