Anchorage police: Man charged with assault following gas station stabbing

A 49-year-old man stands accused of stabbing a downtown Anchorage gas station employee who asked him to leave the store, police said Monday.

Police dispatchers got a call about the stabbing at the Chevron gas station located at 832 E. Sixth Ave. around 3:15 a.m. Monday.

"When officers arrived, they found the suspect running from the area with a knife. He was located by officers in the alley that runs between Hyder Street and Gambell Street and arrested," police said.

Officers' initial investigation found the suspect, identified as Ronald Vaska, was trespassing in the gas station, police said. Vaska was asked to leave by the employee and a security guard, and then a "disturbance occurred resulting in the employee being stabbed in the back, neck and leg," they said.

The employee's injuries were not life threatening, and the victim was taken to a local hospital.

The security guard was not injured, police said.

Vaska faces charges of first- and third-degree assault. He is being held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex on no bail status.

Court records show Vaska was scheduled to make an initial court appearance at the Anchorage jail Monday afternoon.
