Troopers deployed spike strips to stop fleeing Fairbanks man -- but he kept going for 19 miles

A Fairbanks man was arrested after leading Alaska State Troopers on a pursuit for almost 20 miles down the Richardson Highway to Salcha, despite his tires being spiked.

Troopers pulled over a driver identified as Anthony “Squirrel” Jones, 55, of Fairbanks on Friday and found he had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on drug charge, according to an online dispatch.

“Jones failed to stop and led AST on a pursuit southbound on the Richardson Highway,” the dispatch said.

The information from troopers did not say at what time Jones was pulled over or where exactly in Fairbanks.

Troopers threw down spikes near the Dawson overpass. But Jones kept going -- “even though his two front tires were now on rims only,” according to the trooper report.

“Jones continued for 19 miles in this manner,” troopers wrote. He was eventually apprehended on Old Valdez Trail in Salcha.

Troopers found methamphetamine on him, the dispatch said.

Jones was taken to Fairbanks jail on the original warrant charge plus new charges of failing to stop at the direction of a police officer and a third-degree drug possession charge.
