‘Possible incendiary device’ mailed to Anchorage federal courthouse draws bomb squad response

A suspicious package containing a potentially dangerous device was delivered by mail Monday afternoon to the Anchorage federal courthouse, an FBI spokesman said.

The Anchorage Police Department bomb squad and FBI bomb technicians were called to the downtown courthouse around 3 p.m. to check on a suspicious package, said FBI spokesman Steve Forrest.

“The FBI subsequently took possession of the package, rendered it safe and it has since been determined to be a possible incendiary device, but not an improvised explosive device,” Forrest said.

The package was sent from out of state, according to Forrest. The FBI did not provide additional details about what kind of device was inside the package.

Forrest said no one was injured. The postal inspection service will continue the investigation because there was no link to terrorism.

“Based on investigation so far, we do not believe there is any additional risk to our community,” Forrest said.
