2 children struck by SUV in Government Hill crosswalk; driver charged with OUI

A girl was severely injured when an SUV ran over her Sunday night in the Government Hill neighborhood, Anchorage police said.

Roger Wassillie, 65, was driving a Ford Explorer on West Hollywood Drive around 6:30 p.m. and did not stop for two elementary-aged children who were crossing in a crosswalk at the East Loop Road intersection, police said. Both kids were struck by the SUV.

The boy was not injured but the girl was run over by the Explorer and suffered life-threatening injuries, police wrote in an online statement. Police said Monday there were no updates on her condition.

Police said Wassillie remained at the scene and was cooperative. He failed sobriety tests and was charged with operating under the influence.
