Troopers investigate death of Wasilla man as homicide

Alaska State Troopers say they found a man shot dead in a car while responding early Monday to a report of shots fired in Wasilla.

Troopers in an update identified the man as 32-year-old Derek Welsh of Wasilla. They say they responded to a report around 4:40 a.m. of shots fired at the intersection of Old Matanuska and South B Shannon roads.

A resident in the area heard the shots and found Welsh in the car and reported it, according to troopers spokesman Tim DeSpain. He declined to answer additional questions because the homicide investigation is ongoing.
