Golovin man shot by trooper during assault investigation remains in critical condition

A Golovin man shot and injured by an Alaska State Trooper during an assault investigation earlier this week remains in critical condition at an Anchorage hospital, troopers said Saturday.

The officer who shot the man was identified as Jacob Barker, a trooper for three years who is currently assigned to Nome, troopers said in an online report.

Troopers from Nome were in the community Wednesday investigating a report of a felony assault involving a firearm. The man, whom troopers have not identified, was a suspect, and two troopers contacted him at a residence, according to the report.

The man pointed a shotgun at them in the doorway, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel said earlier this week, and Barker shot him.

Both troopers performed first aid and then took the man to the Golovin Clinic for further medical care before he was flown to an Anchorage hospital for treatment, according to troopers.

Barker was placed on 72-hour administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident, and once complete, the results of that investigation will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions, troopers said.
