Man dies in custody at Mat-Su prison

A 76-year-old man died Sunday while incarcerated at Alaska’s largest prison in what state corrections officials described as an expected death, but they provided no additional information.

Bernie Alexia was pronounced dead just after 7 p.m. at Goose Creek Correctional Center in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, according to the Department of Corrections. Alexia has been in custody since 2002 and was serving a sentence for second-degree murder.

Foul play was not suspected, but a statement from the department did not include information about his cause of death, which which will be reviewed by the State Medical Examiner’s Office and Alaska State Troopers.

Alexia is the 11th person to die in custody this year.
