Anchorage man arrested in hit-and-run that seriously injured pedestrian

Anchorage police said an Anchorage man was arrested this week in connection to an early December hit-and-run that seriously injured a pedestrian.

Malik Allen, 26, is facing charges of leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid and driving with a suspended license.

Police used traffic cameras to trace Allen’s SUV to a parking lot after he struck a woman at Fourth Avenue and E Street during the early hours of Dec. 2, according to a sworn criminal complaint signed by an Anchorage Police Department officer. At the scene, camera footage showed the woman crossing Fourth between E and F streets when she was hit by a Ford Expedition, the complaint said.

The footage then showed a man later identified as Allen stopping and getting out of the Expedition and walking toward the woman, who was on the ground and out of view, the complaint said. Allen stayed at the scene for a minute and 20 seconds before getting back into the vehicle and leaving the area, it said.

The woman he hit was transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center for a serious head injury, the complaint said. Her injuries were later considered to be life-threatening, it said.

An update on the pedestrian’s medical condition was not available Friday.

Hospital staff found car parts in the woman’s clothing that police used to confirm the make and model of the involved vehicle, according to the complaint.

Police impounded the SUV and connected Allen to it through the car dealership where he had recently bought it, the complaint said.

The collision happened just two blocks from the downtown police headquarters and officers reviewed footage from their building, as well as from the Pioneer Bar across the street, and saw Allen leave the bar and drive away in the SUV minutes before the collision, the complaint said.

Allen was arrested at his home on Tuesday, police said. He has since been released from custody on bail and is scheduled to appear in court again next week, online records show.
