Bicyclist seriously injured by hit-and-run driver, Anchorage police say

A bicyclist was seriously injured Monday night when a driver struck him from behind and fled, Anchorage police said.

The cyclist was northbound on Arctic Boulevard when he was hit by the vehicle near Highlander Drive, just north of Dimond Boulevard. A passerby reported the cyclist lying in the street just before 10 p.m., police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said. It was dark at the time, but there are streetlights in the area, she said.

The bicyclist, who was not immediately identified, was transported to a hospital with what police described Tuesday morning as life-threatening injuries.

There was no description of the driver available for public release Tuesday morning, police said. They asked anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area to call dispatch at 311, option 1, or 907-786-8900, option 0. Anonymous tips can be submitted online.

The road was closed Monday night following the collision. Police sent out an alert around 6 a.m. Tuesday stating it had been reopened.

It was the second Anchorage hit-and-run reported by police in as many days. A 19-year-old was arrested Monday after police said he drove over a man who was lying in the road near downtown Anchorage on Sunday night and fled the scene. Police on Tuesday identified 32-year-old Phillip Lupie as the man who was hit. Lupie died at a hospital from his injuries, they said.
