Fairbanks gas line break closes Richardson Highway outbound

A natural gas line break is still blocking the Richardson Highway outbound from Fairbanks, about an hour after it was secured.

An alert at about 10:20 a.m. from Fairbanks police said the break, near the 23rd exit along the Richardson southbound, had closed the highway as well as its intersection with Airport Way.

Dan Britton, president and CEO of Fairbanks Natural Gas, said the break was reported at about 9:45 a.m., with the scene secured by about 10:30 a.m.

"The line was damaged by a contractor," Britton said. "It's under control already."

City of Fairbanks spokeswoman Tammy Misrasi confirmed that the closure remained in effect, despite the status of the gas line.

"Airport and Richardson's still closed at this time outbound," Misrasi said.
