Mat-Su fire contained after razing home, injuring 1

A home in the Meadow Lakes area was a total loss after a fire Wednesday morning that left one person injured, according to Matanuska-Susitna Borough fire officials.

Ken Barkley, deputy director of emergency services for the borough, said the fire was reported around 8:15 a.m. at a home on North Captain Circle.

The home was soon fully engulfed. Barkley said flames from the blaze, estimated at more than 50-feet high, had threatened to spread to several smaller cabins as well as a wooded area near the home, but West Lakes and Central Mat-Su fire crews were able to contain them.

"The cabins were all saved — no damage to the cabins," Barkley said. "Just a little spread to the grass — very, very little. It was all put out real quick."

Medics treated and released one person at the scene for minor injuries, Barkley said. In addition, one firefighter was briefly evaluated for heat exhaustion.

There wasn't any immediate word on the home's value or the cause of the fire, which remained under investigation.

"Unfortunately, there's not much left to investigate," Barkley said.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to assist eight displaced residents.
