Golovin man in critical condition after trooper shoots him during assault investigation, officials say

A Golovin man was in critical condition at an Anchorage hospital Thursday after an Alaska State Trooper shot him during an assault investigation the previous day, troopers said.

Troopers from Nome were in the community Wednesday investigating a report of a felony assault involving a firearm, Alaska State Troopers said in an online report. The agency said the man, who was not identified, was a suspect, and two troopers contacted him at a residence.

The man pointed a shotgun at them in the doorway, according to troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel, and one of the troopers shot him.

Both troopers performed first aid and then took the man to the Golovin Clinic for further medical care before he was flown to an Anchorage hospital for treatment, troopers said.

The trooper who fired their weapon was placed on 72-hour administrative leave in accordance with agency policy. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the incident; once complete, the results of that investigation will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions.
