Hiker airlifted from McHugh Creek trail area

An Anchorage woman and her dog were rescued by helicopter from the McHugh Creek area over the weekend after she became stranded on a rock field, Alaska State Troopers said.

Hannah Jay, 21, was hiking on a system of popular trails south of Anchorage along Turnagain Arm when she called authorities shortly after 8 p.m., Saturday, to report becoming stranded, troopers wrote in an online dispatch.

Troopers and family members first tried to reach Jay on foot, but were unable to do so.

Alaska Air National Guard members were called in for assistance because of steep terrain and nightfall, the Alaska Department of Military and Veteran Affairs wrote in a release.

At about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, the Air National Guard launched its HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter from the 210th Rescue Squadron located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, with a team of Guardian Angels on board from the 212th Rescue Squadron on board.

With coordinates Jay provided to troopers using the compass app on her phone, rescuers were able to quickly locate her and hoist her and her dog into the helicopter. Jay was transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center, where she was released.
