Preliminary investigation shows 3-year-old found gun, fatally shot himself, police say

A 3-year-old boy shot and killed himself Wednesday with a gun he found inside of a South Anchorage home, according to a preliminary investigation by the Anchorage Police Department.

Police and medics responded to a home at the 4000 block of Olympic Terrace Circle after receiving a report of a shooting shortly after noon. A 3-year-old boy at the home was pronounced dead at about 12:27 p.m., police said in a statement Thursday.

"The firearm was found at the scene and has been taken as evidence," police said. "No one else was injured."

Detectives interviewed three adults who were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said. Police did not release details on what was said in those interviews.

Anita Shell, police spokesperson, said "that's part of investigation and not releasable at this time."

One of the adults called 911 to report the shooting, Shell said, and one of the adults in the home was a parent of the boy.

Shell said detectives were not releasing any additional information Thursday on the shooting.

Police said no charges have been filed at this time and the case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's Office for review.
