Driver ejected, killed in rollover crash near Fairbanks

Alaska State Troopers say a driver was ejected and killed in a crash Sunday night as Fairbanks police deal with a rash of injury collisions in the wake of a major snowstorm.

Troopers said Tuesday they were notified of the fatal wreck just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday, when Fairbanks police reported a single-vehicle rollover on Farmers Loop Road, north of Fairbanks off the Johansen Expressway.

"Troopers arrived on scene and determined that the sole occupant of the vehicle was ejected and the vehicle came to rest on top of that individual," troopers wrote. "(Emergency medical services) confirmed the driver was deceased."

Farmers Loop Road was briefly closed Sunday night as troopers conducted a full investigation at the crash site.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the identity of the driver hadn't yet been released Wednesday morning, pending verification and next-of-kin notification.

"We have a pretty good idea who it is," Peters said. "We just have to verify it."

Fairbanks police officer Doug Welborn said the Farmer's Loop Road crash was one of several serious crashes police had seen in recent days, a week after a winter storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow on the region.

Welborn urged drivers in the area to budget more time to reach their destinations and drive more slowly on the area's more dangerous roads.

"Our bridges are pretty slick right now," Welborn said. "It's leading to a few rollovers on our highways, and people are hitting objects as they slide off the roads, so they're receiving some pretty nasty injuries."

Correction: This article originally stated the fatal accident occurred on Tuesday. It occurred on Sunday.
