The weather has warmed up and activity is buzzing around Anchorage. There are plenty of indoor activity and entertainment options including music and stage shows. And with temperatures expected to rise above freezing, it should be an excellent weekend to be outside. Just in time for a big free fishing derby and a ski event in the Mat-Su area. Here’s a look at the some of the highlights.
The Sound of (Black) Music
7:30 p.m. Thursday-Friday; Discovery Theatre, 621 West 6th Ave.
This one-act concert is a “reimagining of the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, ‘The Sound of Music,’ through a utopian, afrofuturistic lens full of love.” The songs from the musical find a new voice in different genres featuring jazz, gospel, blues, soul, funk and Afro-beat. Tickets start at $39 and Friday’s performance will also have $15 youth tickets.
Sitka Music Festival
Various weekend times and locations throughout Anchorage
The Sitka Music Festival hits Anchorage this weekend with a number of performances. On Friday at noon, a show at Anchorage Museum will be free with museum admission. Then Friday evening, the first of two Winter Classics performances is headlined by cellist Zuill Bailey and guitarist Timothy Smith. Saturday‘s Winter Classics show is highlighted by soprano Danielle Talamantes. Sunday’s show features Hermitage Piano Trio. Winter Classics shows are at the UAA Recital Hall and tickets are $41.
Clue: The Musical
7 p.m. Friday-Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday; Cyrano’s Theatre, 3800 DeBarr Road
This staged version of the popular game invites the audience to help solve the mystery. Audience members receive forms to help them come to a solution from clues given throughout the musical. Three audience members draw cards representing the potential murderers, weapons and rooms. Friday and Saturday’s shows are sold out but tickets still remain for Sunday and through the rest of the run, which ends March 10. Tickets are $35 and $30 for students, military and seniors.
Anchorage Symphony’s “The Magic of John Williams”
7:30 p.m. Saturday; Atwood Concert Hall, 621 W 6th Ave.
The Anchorage Symphony plays the music of legendary composer John Williams. Williams has developed some of the most memorable film scores of the last half century including “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Indiana Jones,” “Superman” and more. Tickets start at $35.

Jewel Lake Jamboree
10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday; Jewel Lake, 4299 W 88th Ave.
This all-ages free ice fishing jamboree is open to the public. Fishing holes will be drilled and available for the public and limited sets of ice fishing rods and bait will be available to use for free as well. Grizzly Dogs, Kicksled Alaska and Arctic Treats will be there and representatives from Alaska Department of Fish and Game will be on hand with fishing licenses available for purchase.
Mat-Su Ski for Women
1 p.m. Sunday; Government Peak Recreation Area, N. Mountain Trails Dr., Palmer
Launched in 2014, this event is part Nordic skiing and park costume party and attracts people of all genders and skiing skill levels. Registration opens at noon, with a 4K ski starting at 1 p.m. Creative costumes are always encouraged. A $20 donation per participant is suggested.
