Other theatrical events to consider

GHOST TOURS OF ANCHORAGE, a 90-minute guided stroll to allegedly haunted spots downtown, 7:30 p.m. nightly through Sept. 15, starting at Snow City Cafe at Fourth Avenue and L Street. No reservations, just show up. Cost, $15. For more information, call 274-4678 or email anchorageghosts@ gmail.com.

Shakespearean songAnother unusual piece of theater coming up in Anchorage next weekend is Alaska Theatre of Youth's musical adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest."

The company previously produced a musical version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream." It was "an artistic success," said ATY's Jessica Jacob, "which can be attributed in part to the inspired compositions created by Anchorage composer and performer Tim Tucker" who is supplying the tunes for "Tempest." You may have caught his previous work at the old "Whale Fat Follies" show, Fur Rondy Melodrama and other shows.

Steve Hunt is directing the play and choreography is supplied by Ariel Graham.

"TEMPEST, THE MUSICAL" will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday at the UAA Fine Arts Building Mainstage theater. Friday will also be the opening night for Anchorage Theatre of Youth's 25th annual Summer Conservatory Festival of Plays and will include a spaghetti feed and silent auction.

Film to stageSummer is not usually a hot time for theater in Anchorage, but some July shows are already up and running, like "Sleeping Beauty" (above). Adult fare that opened this weekend includes Anchorage Community Theatre's staging of "The 39 Steps," produced in partnership with Midnight Sun Theatre.

This is the first Anchorage production of the play to our knowledge. It just finished a smash Broadway run of more than 1,100 shows, picking up two Tony Awards in the process.

The play's ingenious theatrical device is to present, nearly verbatim, the entirety of Alfred Hitchcock's creepy 1935 classic by the same name, but with a cast of just four. One actor - Justin Birchell - is cast as the hero, with the other three actors taking on the roles of assorted villains, children, passers-by and even inanimate objects.

"THE 39 STEPS" will be presented at 3 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday through July 31 at ACT's studio theater, 1133 E. 70th Ave. General admission is $15, available at actalaska.org or by calling 868-4913.
